Around Emirates

The heart of art

Far from the hustle and bustle of shopping malls, high-decibel entertainment and glitzy fashion shows is an entirely different aspect of the Dubai Shopping Festival — the Emaar International Art Symposium (EIAS).

Now in its fourth edition, this event organised by Emaar Properties in support of DSF, adds an artistic flourish to the festivities by bringing artists from around the globe to Dubai.

This year 17 artists and 13 sculptors from over 14 countries are participating in the art symposium. The sculptors arrived on February 6 and have been working in tents set up on the beach next to Jumeirah Beach Park. The painters began working on February 12 in tents set up on the grounds of the Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club at the Arabian Ranches.

Mission artists sparkle with captivating perspective !

'Evening with the Artists' exhibit

Next door, the Blue Studio hosted an "Evening with the Artists" gallery show curated by Sarah Bright, Stephen Stout and Michael Latronica. Twenty Blue Studio artists treated the public to contemporary oil paintings, mixed media, jewelry and other works, while indulging in libations and exchanging friendly dialogue.

With so many intriguing visuals from which to indulge the eye, I was drawn to Sidnea D'Amico's, sidneadamico.com, mixed media display, "Ho Voluto Volare 4", created of resin with painted acrylic inside plastic boxes. Multi-colored glossy resin cubes were arranged in different-sized clusters illustrating a contrast between the group and the individual. A magnifying glass dangled over the display so visitors could marvel over the minute painterly swirls of acrylic embedded within each piece.

D'Amico said she appreciates creating art the most when she is able to take her painting to a new and unexplored level. "My technique begins with these very colorful dots, which are like miniature paintings embedded in the resin," said D'Amico, who is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. "Their interrelations among one another become changed and even compromised through their placement."

The Blue Studio is located on the 4th floor of 2111 Mission St. For more Mission District Galleries, visit sfmission.com.

Small but Excellent !

Small but Excellent by Alder Gallery's 'La Petite'BY SYLVIE PEDERSON

"When it comes to two-dimensional art in La Petite, the collection of mixed-media and collage works is rather bland, though Sidnea D'Amico's (San Francisco) Whimsey pieces are fun and less predictable. Weakest is photography".
